Abstract

Fracture mechanics methods and FEM modeling techniques were used to investigate fretting cracks in paper machine roll’s head fit. It was found that stress intensity factor  and its range   start to decrease while crack tip makes progress into shell wall. In terms of crack growth that means slowing downwards and even crack arrest is possible.
