Abstract

In this study, a new failure mechanism of tubular X-joints is presented. When a compressed X-joint made of square hollow sections with equal brace and chord widths, the joint can lose its stability by distortional buckling mode. In this mechanism, the distortion of the cross section occurs in the chord member. The obtained analytical model of distortional buckling mode is based on the deformation energy equilibrium induced by a virtual displacement in the joint.
