A systematic procedure of deriving and programming of exact finite elements for some beam problems of structural mechnics with minimum effort is presented. A prerequisite is that the differential equation of the problem and its general solution is available. The method is demonstrated by deriving the formulas needed for programming an exact Timoshenko beam element. Two-span timber beam is studied as an example.
